The Battle of Roundway Down was fought here in 1643. It is the only registered battlefield in Wiltshire, one of 47 in England. The registered area covers 9.7 km². It lies within the North Wessex Downs National Landscape.

For arrivals by rail, Melksham Station is 11.2 km to the west.
