Wiltshire's second-oldest white horse, cut on Cherhill Down in 1780, below the tall Lansdowne Monument.
Cut in 1780, this is the second-oldest of the Wiltshire horses, laid out to a design by Christopher Alsop, a doctor from nearby Calne. For years its eye was set with upturned glass bottles that caught the sun, until souvenir-hunters removed them one by one. It sits below the Lansdowne Monument and the Iron Age earthworks of Oldbury Castle. You can see it without leaving the car, from a layby on the westbound A4 near Cherhill, or walk onto the down from Avebury and the Ridgeway close by.
