An Elizabethan house of 1582, bought in 1745 by Sir Paul Methuen to hang his Old Masters — the picture gallery and the grounds were both reworked by Capability Brown, who added a lake, a ha-ha and a mile-long avenue. Peacocks roam the lawns. Still the Methuen family’s home at Corsham; paid entry on set days, with Chippenham station about 5km to the north-east.
