Avebury sits inside the largest prehistoric stone circle in the world, its bank and ditch nearly a mile round, with two smaller rings and huge sarsen stones set within. The village street runs straight between the megaliths. Silbury Hill and the West Kennet long barrow are a short walk south. The National Trust and English Heritage look after it, and it’s free to wander at any hour.
