Boys from a Marlborough school cut this horse into Granham Hill in 1804, and it is the oldest of the Wiltshire horses set against a town rather than out on open down. The ground later became part of Marlborough College, which still looks after it. The grander horses lie out on the open chalk of the North Wessex Downs to the north.
