Savernake Forest is one of England’s oldest, a working woodland of ancient oaks and beeches still privately owned by the Savernake Estate but free to explore year-round via a network of paths, including the mile-long Grand Avenue that Capability Brown laid out towards the house. Tottenham House itself, the Georgian mansion at its heart, is a private residence and not open — you’ll see it only from a distance along the avenue. Look out for the Big Belly Oak, thought to be well over 1,000 years old, near the Postern Hill car park on the Marlborough side.
