The church clock at Wootton Rivers is the village’s oddity. A local man, Jack Spratt, built it from scrap iron, brass and old gun-metal to mark George V’s coronation in 1911, and lettered one of its dials ‘Glory be to God’ instead of numbers. The thatched village strings along a lock on the Kennet and Avon Canal between Pewsey and Marlborough. Pewsey station is about 5km south-west.
