The only working windmill in Wessex stands on a chalk ridge above the Kennet and Avon Canal, near Great Bedwyn. This five-storey brick tower mill was built in 1821 — the new canal had taken the water that once turned the local watermills — and after decades derelict was restored to working order in the 1970s. It still grinds stoneground flour, sold here on the open days when you can climb it on a guided tour. Bedwyn station is about 3km north.
