A replica double gallows stands high on Inkpen ridge, planted squarely on top of a Neolithic long barrow some 60m long. The gibbet was first raised in 1676 to display the bodies of two locals convicted of murder, and was never used again after that one occasion; the present timber is the latest of several replacements. It’s a steep pull up to open downland with enormous views over the Kennet valley. Kintbury station is about 5km to the north-east.
