Places to explore in BerkshireEngland · South East England

Along the Thames from the western edge of London to the chalk of the Berkshire Downs, this is the royal county, named for Windsor Castle, the oldest occupied fortress in the world. The deer park and ancient oaks of Windsor Great Park spread south from its walls, while ruined Donnington Castle recalls the Civil War sieges around Newbury. The Kennet threads the southern vale, carrying the Kennet & Avon Canal; walkers climb to Combe Gibbet on the downs, and the Thames slides past Boulter's Lock.
