Come on a summer evening for the nightjars: Snelsmore Common, a country park of heath, bog and birch north of Newbury, is one of the better places in the county to hear them churr after dark. By day it’s grazed by ponies and easy to wander on level tracks, with a car park at the edge. Open access, and free. Newbury Racecourse station is about 4km to the south.
