Boulter’s Lock sits on the Thames just above Maidenhead, its present chamber rebuilt in 1912. In Edwardian summers this was the smart place to be, packed with pleasure boats on Ascot Sunday as the racing set drifted downstream towards Cliveden. The weir stream still fills with craft in season, and there’s an easy towpath walk either side. Ray Mill Island, bought in 1909 to let the lock expand, adjoins it just upstream. Taplow station is about 1.5km to the south-east.
