Cliveden is a grand Italianate mansion set on cliffs above the Thames near Taplow, long the home of the Astor family. The National Trust looks after the gardens — a huge formal parterre, a water garden, box-hedged compartments and miles of woodland walks — while the house itself is now a hotel and not part of the visit. Garden entry is ticketed. Cookham station lies about 2.5km away across the river.
