Rowers know Dorney Lake as the venue that staged the 2012 Olympic rowing and canoe sprint. It’s a purpose-built, dead-straight course dug beside the Thames near Eton and owned by the college, ringed by a parkland loop that’s open to walkers and cyclists when no event is on. Taplow station is about 3.5km north across the river.
