Lambourn is one of the great centres of British racehorse training, its downland gallops long known as the ‘Valley of the Racehorse’ — strings of thoroughbreds cross the lanes at exercise most mornings. In the square stands the large Norman church of St Michael and All Angels. It’s high, remote country, and the nearest station at Hungerford is a fair drive south.
