Legend puts St George’s fight with the dragon on this flat-topped chalk knoll below the Uffington White Horse. The bare white patch on its crown is said to be where the dragon’s blood spilled, so that nothing has grown there since. It’s a small natural hill, squared off by human hands, on open-access downland you can walk straight onto from the same car park as the horse.
