A tall, steep-roofed lodge in the Dutch style, standing on its own high on the downs near Ashbury. William, 1st Earl of Craven built it around 1663 — by tradition for Elizabeth, the exiled Queen of Bohemia, who died before it was finished. The National Trust has held it since 1956; the staircase and roof terrace are shown by guided tour only, April to October. Swindon station is about 14km west.
