A Neolithic long barrow set in a ring of beech trees just off the Ridgeway, Wayland’s Smithy was raised around 5,500 years ago over the bones of earlier burials, its facade of tall sarsen stones still standing. Saxons named it for Wayland, a smith-god of legend: leave your horse and a coin overnight, the story goes, and find it shod by morning. It’s open access and free, an easy walk on from the Uffington White Horse.
