Thomas Hughes, who wrote Tom Brown’s Schooldays, was born here in 1822, and the village keeps a small museum to him. Uffington is a chalk-and-thatch place under the downs, best used as a base for the famous White Horse cut into the hillside above, with Dragon Hill and the Blowing Stone close by. The walk up onto the downs is the reason to come.
