William Morris took Kelmscott Manor as a country home from 1871, and its gardens and grey gabled walls run all through his wallpapers and writing. The Tudor house now belongs to the Society of Antiquaries and holds a fine collection of his work, furniture and textiles. The cottage garden runs down towards the Thames. Open Thursday to Saturday, April to October, with timed tickets, so it’s worth booking ahead.
