Fans of Downton Abbey will recognise Bampton without ever having been: this small west-Oxfordshire town played the fictional village, its cottages and church standing in for Yorkshire. St Mary’s, at the centre, appeared as the church where Lady Mary married Matthew Crawley. Limestone houses gather round a broad green, with an old grammar school and library worth a look. The nearest station is a fair way off, so it’s really a place to reach by car.
