William Morris took Kelmscott Manor as his country home in 1871 and loved it to the end of his life; the Thames-meadow village of grey stone cottages around it has barely changed since. The Tudor manor is open to visitors in season, run by the Society of Antiquaries, and Morris lies under a simple stone in the churchyard at St George’s. It’s deep in the fields, well off the railway.
