Lechlade marks the highest point the Thames is navigable to narrowboats — above the town’s Halfpenny Bridge the river shrinks to a stream. The tall spire of St Lawrence’s church rises over the surrounding water meadows, a scene Shelley wrote about after visiting. A pleasant Cotswold-stone town for a riverside stop. Swindon station is about 16km south-west.
