A ford crosses the Shill brook in the middle of Shilton, below a scatter of stone cottages and a small church on the rise. The unspoilt look has put it on screen — scenes for Downton Abbey and other period films were shot here. There’s little to do beyond admire it and carry on, so it’s a village to pass through slowly on foot or by car.
