Built in 1964 around a modernist house for the barrister and arts patron Milton Grundy, this is one of the few Japanese-style gardens in England laid out with real expertise on the ground — a team of Japanese gardeners led by a Mr Kasamoto shaped the pool, raked gravel and stepping stones after Grundy’s own trip to Kyoto. It’s a private garden, not generally open, but tour groups get a rare look in occasionally through organisations like the Turn End Trust. Shipton-under-Wychwood is right on the doorstep.
