St John the Baptist, Burford
In 1649 Cromwell locked several hundred mutinous Leveller soldiers in this church; three ringleaders were shot against the churchyard wall, and one prisoner scratched “Anthony Sedley 1649 Prisner” into the lead of the font, where it can still be read. Beyond that history, it’s one of the grand Cotswold wool churches, much added-to over the centuries, standing by the Windrush in Burford. Open to visitors.
