The Mitford children spent their early years at Asthall Manor, the Jacobean house the family took after the First World War before moving on to nearby Swinbrook. The village sits low in the Windrush valley, with a small Norman church beside the manor. The manor is private, but the church is open daily, the lane through is a quiet one to walk, and Burford is just up the road.
