Warren Hastings, the first Governor-General of British India, bought the unfinished house at Daylesford in 1788 and had it remodelled by Samuel Pepys Cockerell, the East India Company’s architect, with a domed bay front echoing buildings he’d seen in India. The current owners, the Bamford family, run the walled garden organically, with glasshouses and a rose garden, and open it a handful of days a year for the National Garden Scheme. The Daylesford Organic farm shop is just down the lane.
