Hilltop market town with the yew-flanked church door.
Stow is the highest of the Cotswold market towns, at around 800 feet — hence the old line ‘Stow-on-the-Wold, where the wind blows cold’. Its big market square, once packed with sheep fairs, is reached by narrow alleys called ‘tures’ that once funnelled the flocks in. The Porch House claims to be one of England’s oldest inns. Moreton-in-Marsh station is about 7km north.
