The modern rules of croquet were codified at Chastleton in the 1860s, and you can still play on the lawns. The house behind them is a little-altered Jacobean manor, built for a wool merchant between 1607 and 1612 and handed to the National Trust barely touched. The garden keeps its old walled layout, with clipped topiary at its heart. Paid entry; Moreton-in-Marsh station is about 6km north-west.
