John Betjeman lived at the Old Rectory from 1945 to 1951, high on the Berkshire Downs above Farnborough. The eight-acre garden came later — herbaceous borders, an arboretum and a run of hedged rooms worked up over half a century by the family who followed. It opens only a handful of days a year for the National Garden Scheme, so check their listings for dates before setting out.
