Folly Farm is one of the best surviving collaborations between the architect Edwin Lutyens and garden designer Gertrude Jekyll, its formal terraces, pools and yew hedges built up around a 17th-century farmhouse from 1906. It remains a private home, so the garden opens only occasionally, through arranged visits with groups like the Lutyens Trust rather than on any regular season. Worth watching for if you’re planning ahead. Theale station is about 2.5km to the north-east.
