Substantial ruinsruined, but plenty survives above ground
Just outside the north-east wall of the Roman town of Calleva Atrebatum, this is one of the best-preserved amphitheatres in Britain. First raised in timber around AD 55–75 and later rebuilt in earth and stone, its oval arena and grassed banks still stand clear enough to walk into — the seating held something like three and a half thousand people. It’s in the guardianship of English Heritage, free and open, reached on foot across the fields from the Roman Town car park on Wall Lane; the ground can be muddy after rain. The town’s medieval church sits within the old walls a short way south.
