Places to explore in HampshireEngland · South East England

Chalk underlies most of Hampshire, feeding the clear streams of the River Test and the Itchen and rising into open down at Watership Down. To the south the ground turns to the heath, bog and ancient woodland of the New Forest, a royal hunting ground since William the Conqueror. Winchester was the capital of Saxon Wessex, and Winchester Cathedral holds the longest medieval nave in Europe. The Romans walled Portchester, later a Norman stronghold at Portchester Castle, while the Cistercians left their mark on the Beaulieu River at Beaulieu Abbey.
