New Alresford (say ‘Allsford’) is a Georgian market town of colour-washed houses, its wide Broad Street lined with limes. It was a centre of the watercress trade, and the preserved steam railway that once carried the crop to market — the Watercress Line — still runs from here to Alton. A riverside walk follows the old millpond and Itchen headwaters. Winchester station is about 11km to the west.
