Cheesefoot Head is a natural amphitheatre — a deep, curved hollow scooped into the chalk down — a few miles east of Winchester. The bowl, often called the Matterley Bowl, is broad enough that General Eisenhower reportedly used it to address Allied troops gathered here in the run-up to the D-Day landings of 1944. From the rim there are wide views over the downs, and the South Downs Way runs right along the top. The natural acoustics of the bowl also make it a site for large outdoor events. Winchester and its cathedral are a few miles west.
