Avington Park is a Palladian house on the River Itchen near Winchester, extended in the 1670s to give Charles II and his mistress Nell Gwyn somewhere to live after Winchester’s cathedral clergy refused them lodgings in the city. A pair of curved 19th-century conservatories and a lake came later. It’s a private family home and wedding venue these days, but the house opens for guided tours on summer Sunday and bank-holiday afternoons, with free access to the grounds. River Itchen runs along the park’s northern edge.
