Cheriton is a quiet village of thatched cottages around a green and the young River Itchen, which rises close by. In 1644 one of the larger battles of the Civil War was fought in the fields to the east, a Parliamentarian victory. The village pub, the Flower Pots Inn, brews its own beer on site. Winchester station is about 11km to the west.
