At 170 metres from west door to east end, Winchester is the longest medieval cathedral in the world, and the nave you walk up is the longest Gothic one in Europe. Jane Austen lies in the north aisle under a slab that says nothing about her novels. The building was sinking into the peat beneath it until a diver, William Walker, spent 1906 to 1911 underwater packing the foundations with bags of concrete; his statue is inside. Sightseeing is ticketed, entry for worship free. The Hospital of St Cross is a walk downriver.
