The 18th-century family home of Gilbert White, the parson-naturalist whose journal of local wildlife became the enduringly popular book The Natural History of Selborne. The 25 acres of garden have been restored to White’s own design, with flower borders, a wildlife garden and touches — like the ha-ha he had dug by hand — straight from his writing. The house also holds the Oates Collections, tracing two explorers from the same family: Frank Oates in southern Africa and Lawrence Oates of Scott’s ill-fated Terra Nova expedition. Open Tuesday to Sunday, with a small admission charge, in the village of Selborne.
