Selborne sits under a steep wooded hanger in east Hampshire, famous as the home of the 18th-century naturalist Gilbert White, whose Natural History of Selborne was drawn from watching this one parish. His house, The Wakes, is now a museum, and the zig-zag path he cut up the hanger still climbs to the beech woods above, free to walk. Alton station is about 6km to the north.
