The Royal Oak at Fritham is a thatched New Forest free house, tucked in the northern Forest and part of a working farm. Three small low-beamed rooms, ale and cider poured straight from the cask, and simple food like ploughman’s lunches — it’s long been a walkers’ favourite and a Good Beer Guide regular. Ashurst New Forest station is about 11km to the east.
