Boldre is a scattered New Forest parish of quiet lanes, best known for its hilltop church of St John reached by a wooded track above the Lymington River. William Gilpin, the 18th-century writer who popularised the idea of the ‘picturesque’, was vicar here and is buried in the churchyard. Lymington Town station is about 3km to the south-east.
