Pylewell Park’s ornamental lake and pleasure grounds, planted up with rhododendron, magnolia and azalea in the 1890s, open for just one month a year — April — plus two National Garden Scheme days with a small admission charge. Views run south across the Solent to the Isle of Wight from a 1,500-acre estate that’s been in the Roper-Curzon family since 1988. A permissive path along the foreshore stays open year-round if you miss the window. Lymington is a few kilometres west.
