Titchfield is an old village of narrow streets near the head of the Meon estuary. On its edge stand the ruins of Titchfield Abbey, later remodelled into a grand Tudor house, Place House, now in English Heritage’s care. The Earls of Southampton lived here — the third earl was Shakespeare’s patron — and their tombs fill a chapel in St Peter’s church. Titchfield Haven bird reserve lies down at the coast. Fareham station is about 3km to the east.
