Farlington Marshes
Local highlightA grazing-marsh bird reserve on Langstone Harbour near Portsmouth, walked on a flat sea-wall loop and busy with birds in winter
Farlington Marshes is a spread of old grazing marsh — low, damp coastal pasture — jutting into Langstone Harbour on the edge of Portsmouth, run as a bird reserve by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust. A flat path follows the sea wall right around, so it makes an easy loop with water on both sides. Autumn and winter are the times to come, when brent geese, wigeon, waders and other wildfowl gather on the mud and the fields in big numbers. Access is open. The Solent Way and King Charles III England Coast Path run right past, and Chichester Harbour is a little way east.
