Hambledon calls itself the ‘cradle of cricket’: in the 1760s and ’70s the Hambledon Club played on Broadhalfpenny Down above the village and did much to shape the modern game. The Bat and Ball still stands opposite the old ground. Nearby, Hambledon Vineyard was England’s first modern commercial vineyard, planted in 1952. Rowlands Castle station is about 10km to the south-east.
