Come for the setting above the River Test as much as the garden: Houghton Lodge is a rare surviving 18th-century cottage orné, built around 1790, with lawns running down to the water. A walled kitchen garden holds a record-breaking espaliered pear alongside herbs and orchard trees, and a newer Oriental Garden adds a rose walk and cherry orchard. Still a family home, it opens to visitors from spring to autumn with a ticket, and there’s a tearoom for cream teas. Stockbridge is a couple of miles away.
