Cadland House began as a fishing cottage on the Solent shore, remodelled by the architect Henry Holland for the banker Robert Drummond in the 1770s, with ‘Capability’ Brown laying out the small coastal pleasure ground around it — reckoned one of his smallest surviving landscapes. It’s still a private family home on the Cadland Estate near Fawley, with views across Southampton Water to the Isle of Wight. The garden opens only by written appointment, for parties of 20 or more, from May to July and September to October. Calshot Castle and Lepe are a short drive south.
