The house at Exbury stays private, home to the Rothschild family who created the garden around it. Lionel de Rothschild bought the estate in 1919 and spent decades breeding rhododendrons and azaleas across 200 acres running down to the Beaulieu River, still rated among the finest gardens of their kind. A narrow-gauge steam railway loops round the north-east corner. Open seasonally for the flowering displays, with an admission charge; Beaulieu and Bucklers Hard are a short way north-west.
